Up for auction is this one-of-a-kind custom-built acoustic guitar owned and played by the legendary Doc Watson. The guitar was built for Doc as a retirement gift in 1990 by luthier Carl McIntyre of Charlotte, NC, who at the time was Doc’s guitar technician. The guitar is signed on the interior label "W.C. McIntyre" and dated  “10/16/90”.

The guitar is all-original except for a replaced pickguard. The original was pepperoni-colored material. The new pickguard is real and was made and installed by Carl.

The guitar is in overall excellent condition. There is a worn spot below the pickguard and a small hairline crack in the lower bout of the back (repaired). A nice, easy-playing guitar with a full, rich tone.

GUITAR SPECS:

  • Scale: 25-1/2”
  • Fingerboard at nut: 1-3/4”
  • Back and sides are made of sapele wood
  • Top is made of sitka spruce.
  • Neck is made of Honduran mahogany.
  • Ebony fretboard and peg-head overlay.
  • Brazilian rosewood bridge and armrest.
  • Mother-of-pearl inlays and rosette.
  •  “Doc Watson” inlaid in mother-of-pearl at end of fingerboard.
  • Serial #007 (Doc often referred to this guitar as his "James Bond guitar")

Doc played this guitar during his early-‘90s appearance on “American Music Shop,” a television show formerly on The Nashville Network. Doc can be seen playing the McIntyre guitar in these two clips:

Doc also played the guitar at the 1991 Merlefest. (See photo of Doc onstage at Merlefest with the guitar.)

Doc traded this guitar back to McIntyre in the late 1990s for another McIntyre-built guitar. You can see a picture of this guitar in a review of a 2011 Doc Watson concert: http://leskerr.wordpress.com/2011/07/29/doc-watson-makes-a-house-call-to-a-packed-house/

(*Note Carl’s name mentioned in the 3rd paragraph.)
