A customer brought in an early 70's Gibson that needs "tortoise shell" binding work - is it possible to re amalgamate the stuff with MEK or acetone, or encapsulate it with epoxy or other adhesive, or is that out of the question?

Hello fellow luthiers!

I have a serious problem, I need to do the binding part in a couple of guitars I'm building by commission but I never did it! I know the theory and with the propper tools I would be able to do it, BUT I don't have any specific tools and I live in South America, so it's hard to buy the propper tools like Stewmac, but I could order something if it's not very expensive.

Any suggestions for the tools and the binding material?

Hey All, I was wondering if you can help through something. I'm doing a complete re-bind on an Old Country Gent. I've done a handful of these at this point using weld-on with great results as far as securing the binding goes but am left with some touching up to do (on the wood portions) as the weld-on attacks the finish pretty aggressively.

My question is what do you think of using Titebond on a large re-bind like this? Ive used it for smaller separations on Martins but never on an entire re-bind. Do you think it will be a strong enough hold for an entire re-bind?
advice needed for multi layer bindingtag:fretsnet.ning.com,2014-01-11:2177249:Topic:1253532014-01-11T05:44:15.432ZMicha Schellhaashttp://fretsnet.ning.com/profile/MichaSchellhaas

I have a dremel and I'll get the Stew Mac guide and binding routing attachment, but how do I get the 3 layer binding together? I need to source all the 3 strips seperately and glue them on seperately too? With acetone?

I want to make a binding forming jig, to pre form the binding, too.

Mciha
Alternative to Weld-on #16?tag:fretsnet.ning.com,2011-06-25:2177249:Topic:605302011-06-25T14:52:12.242ZIan Barkerhttp://fretsnet.ning.com/profile/IanBarker

Weld-on 16 seems to be the weapon of choice for fixing plastic binding, but I can't get it over here and Stewmac etc. can't ship it. Tried epoxy, but I'm not happy with it, and clean-up is a nightmare.

Anyone got a good alternative for this?

This past summer my wife and I spent some time making storage in the garage and rearranging stuff. This gave me another 4' width to the "shop" space so installed a long bench that I can use for portable bench machines (detail bandsaw, small drill press) and a big clear space for clamping and such. Overall, I like the space, but thought now that I have the space maybe one of those LMII/StewMac style binding rigs might be cool. Do you think it's worth the work? Have you tried one and gone…

I've got an '83 Martin in with loose binding at the waist. It was loose at the lower bout, I used thick viscosity superglue (Special T from Lee Valley Tools) with good results.

There is a lot of outward tension and it will not stay in place at the waist without some sort of clamp (tape).

I understand stewmac's weld-on cement eats finish, and I am very used to super glue. Any suggestions?

Thanks much!!

Sean
Suggestions for a laminate router for universal binding jig?tag:fretsnet.ning.com,2009-12-04:2177249:Topic:215332009-12-04T21:50:59.747ZLarry Schultzhttp://fretsnet.ning.com/profile/LarrySchultz
I've decided to bite the bullet and get a universal binding jig, like Stew-Mac's. Any suggestions on a good laminate router that would fit, is easy to adjust, and won't break the bank? Any pros/cons to either StewMac's or LMI's jigs, or are there others available? Thanks in advance.

For all the pros out there,
How do you handle the vintage Gretsch that arrives in your shop with crumbling binding? We've taken various approaches over the years from removing the old stuff and actually re-binding the guitar to filling the really bad spots with epoxy and airbrushing to match the color of the original.
So we're refinishing an old ES 355 (for good reason, don't worry,) and the customer figures as long as the finish is off and he's already spending some $$, we may as well bind the F holes too. We figure that's going to be a pain in the butt, but okay.

The question is, what do you guys like to use for clamping pressure in such cases? The binding is about .070" thick and is proving a little stiff for tape. We've heated it and dry-clamped it... It'll work but we're just looking for any further…
