My first post here... a follow-up question. Would keeping guitars at a a constant cool (not extreme cold) temp put them at risk?

I have my guitars (half a dozen Guild dreads from '71-'92) in a small basement room in my home. During the winter, the room temp hovers around 60F (perhaps as low as 58F during a real cool spell when outside temps fall to <10F). The temp is pretty stable... with <5F variation during the day. During the winter, the room temp hovers around 60F (perhaps as low as 58F during a real cool spell when outside temps fall to <10F). The temp is pretty stable... with <5F variation during the day. I have reasoned that constant cool temp is less likely to be damaging, so don't use any space heaters to try and warm the room (I worry about uneven or rapid heating). The guitars are on stands, or hung securely on the wall, ready to play (I do play them at that temp). I do use a small humidifier to keep the room at 40~45% RH. Should I be concerned about temps in this range?
All of the comments about cold and finish checking are correct, but the biggest problem you face (I work in Minneapolis and I know) is low humidity. Checks in the finish are unsightly but not structural, but cracked tops or severly dried out wood can be very damaging. I have a little essay on the subject on my web site, here: http://www.hoffmanguitars.com/Humidity%20and%20your%20Guitar.htm.

Well, I got to play it again when he got back and it just seemed more responsive, louder, and a bit sweeter. The change wasn't like going from a standard top to a Nomex-sandwich double top, for sure, but it was still quite evident.
You should never leave or store instruments in the cold.
No scientific data, but my belief is, keep them where it is no colder than 40 degrees and no warmer than 80 degrees.

Instruments are like people and should be kept in the same environment.
Yep, back in the late '60s. I had a friend that was in a college folk group that made a tour that included some hops around Greenland of all places. When he pulled his prize Gibson Humminbird out of its case after a very cold flight. he watched the finish crazed as it warmed up. His comment, though, was "Wow, you wouldn't believe the change in sound!".
My experience exactly! It isn't the cold or the heat it is the change from cold to warm to fast that cracks it. The wood moves faster than the finish so it cracks. I have a acoustic guitar that I watched it crack when I left it below 0 for a few hrs than brought it in and open the case and watched the cracks develop.
