I got the "best of both worlds", so to speak. I took everyone's helpful, unanimous advice (thank you very much, everyone), and bought the genuine article; the venerable Wagner Safe-T-Planer. AND I bought it used on eBay, so I saved a few bucks!

So I'm going to be a pest here asking for advice. Having very limited experience with woodworking (and none in finishing), the learning curve will be very steep for me.

I'd hate to see the results of attempting to fill the gaps, not getting things balanced quite right, and then having a nice wobble on the planer. At best you would have a lousy planing cut.The Wagner is so right on, so very well made, it's really hard to imagine fooling around with anything else to save a few bucks. And if you lose $25 of good wood due to going cheaper, then your savings are gone. And the tolerances are so tight on the Wagner that you can cut the rabbett in a bridge and not…

While there are many tools that are adequately substituted with cheaper versions, I really don't think this is one of those.
I see about a $25 difference…tag:fretsnet.ning.com,2011-09-25:2177249:Comment:729952011-09-25T14:45:01.549ZFRANKhttps://fretsnet.ning.com/profile/PAUL
I see about a $25 difference here .and I agree with FF but If i were in need of this item right away with similar concerns and could only afford the planer from WWS Id try to fill those gaps with epoxy or something to fill up the Voids next to the Blades ,so it wont rip your work from your hands .

I use a small press, and it's fine. You need a pretty solid table that will stay where you adjust it - that's key.

Offhand, the area that makes me uneasy is the bottom section of the casting where there are open spaces. The real deal is solid on the bottom, so there's no chance it could snag an end of a small piece that might pop up.

Thank you for helping me come to my senses! The $20 I'd "save" on a cheap tool isn't really saving if it breaks and needs to be replaced, or if it does damage to an expensive piece of wood or a paying customer's guitar. And my co-pay at the ER would be more than twice the "savings" if I get injured. I preach the error of "false economy" to my wife and kids about how it costs less to buy a quality item that will last for years, versus paying less on a poor quality look-alike item that will…

I guess I won't bother to ask what everyone thinks about Harbor Freight... ;-)

Will the Safe-T-Planer be compatible with my small benchtop drill press, if all I plan to do is make headstock veneers and small parts, or will I need to get a larger drill press if i plan to plane on it?
Mike Kolb said:

Yep, I agree. Get the Wagner. It is a great tool, and you don't know what you are getting with the other one.
