FRETS.NET

Hello - I'm new to this forum and not a luthier but a lap steel enthusiast. I am about to acquire one of these guitars (not the one shown in the photo below, a 1936 model). It's going to need a little work, and Jason Lollar has agreed to work on the pickup. My question is regarding the tuners. One of the tuners on the bass side may need to be replaced, and for all the searching I've done on Google, the only hope I have is that these are pre-war Grover G 98 tuners. I would appreciate any help in understanding what I might be able to do. Thanks.

Hello Ralph,

I think you would be very lucky to find old parts like that, maybe you could find something on ebay (but like I said, you would have to be very lucky)

I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with the tuner. (for example: is it bend, is it stuck/won't twist, or are there parts broken off/missing?) (cause I'm not sure if the photo above shows the tuners of the lapsteel you are going to buy)

In case the tuner is bend --> this could be helpfull http://www.stewmac.com/show_video/0111?tab=Video

In case the tuner is stuck/won't twist, don't force it, try to clean and lubricate it.

In case there are parts broken off/missing. Try to befriend a good metalworker in the nearby future :)

In case of doubt get a luthier to do the work

Thanks Jelle - I should have been clearer: I haven't yet received the guitar and the picture was intended to show the type of tuners these guitars have. Since I posted my question, the issue has become clearer: the tuner is missing its metal knob. I guess if the tuner is otherwise functioning, we could use a plastic knob (until the real thing comes along...) Thanks again.
