Dumb 'Good Idea'

Maybe everybody else knows this, but...  I had Guild acoustic in the shop. It had a 'dryed out' stress crack on the soundboard. I did all the right stuff, cleats, Tightbond worked into the crack, etc. I hav some small specs in the now ready to lacquer dropfill depression. I had the bright idea to use a can of compressed air to blow the specs out.....overdid it froze the dang lacquer in the area around it, created spiderweb cracks in the finish.

 

Long story short, sanding the area until I was almost thu the lacquer, didn't want to cut into the wood, still could see the spider web cracks, but ti was now really thin. Shot a layer of lacquer...spiderweb disappeared. Job is bigger not, but salvaged.

 

 

The hurrier I go......the behinder I get.

I guess you learned that you can't remove lacquer cracks by sanding, won't work. Only solution would be to add lacquer or just spray the area with lacquer retarder, can also eliminate the cracked lacquer.

To easily remove cracked lacquer, or checking... use Butylcellusolve to remelt the lacquer. Found at any chemical supply house. I swear by it!
