when i sand ebony right next to maple, the ebony powder stains the maple. other than masking off the maple [ not always easy when they run into each other ] is there an easy fix ?

Careful work with a razor sharp scraper - that's my answer.
I use Mirka Abranet sandpaper mounted on a caul linked to my shop vac. Abranet+vacuum is great for that kind of job.
I use a Festool ROS hooked up to a Festool dust collector and with combos such as ebony/spruce with say 120 grit I do get some contamination of the spruce but when I switch to 220 and with the vac on the contamination goes away. Not sure that moving up to the finer grades of sand paper would work though without a vac in the process.
