I dunno... I think that certain guitars lend themselves to certain situations and, in your friend's case, he believed the Ovation was a better tool for the particular job at hand. He's entitled to that opinion.
From a purely financial standpoint, it was not a great trade.... but it's a free country.
Disclaimer: I generally dislike Ovations from a repair point-of-view but, ironically, they seem to sound pretty darned good!
Amplified vs. Non-Amplified. Two different worlds. I don't like working on Ovations, but they have a place in this world. These are just guitars. It's almost all in the hands and heart anyway.
Oh the horror.... a long reach bed pan with strings.....
Luke buddy I try not to read Lutherie forums before going to sleep and I avoid caffeine and garlic too....:)
Remember that old thing about putting dog crap in a bag and setting it on fire on someone's front porch and ringing the door bell? I once came into the shop and Dave had left an Ov*tion on my bench and it reminded me of the burning dog crap thing.... or the scene from Apocalypse Now where Kurtz tosses a severed head in the lap of Martin Sheen....:)
PS: I read somewhere that back in the day Ov*tions accounted for 1/3 of all guitars sold in America.... Scary I know....
