I bought a routing template for a "strat" type neck, which worked out well as far as getting my body to look like a guitar (without a neck). My next steps were neck building but planning it out I realized I didn't have a great plan for getting the neck to fit snuggly in this pocket. I did a test run on a maple board with mixed results at best, am I in practice makes perfect territory here?
Any tips appreciated.

I'll have a go just because I'm here but I warn you that electrics are foreign territory to me.
If you have a template for routing the socket in the body, it seems to me that you should be able to use that template to make a template for the neck. It's basically the negative of the template you already have. You will need to make some trial runs to check the fit but you should be able to get pretty close without too much trouble.
I would suggest that you take a lot of trouble insuring that the new template is aligned on the neck blank properly so you don't end up with a crooked neck set. It might be best to do this part before you completely shape the neck so you can have a bid of fudge room. In any case practice and testing seem to be in order... In other words, you are in " practice makes perfect territory".
Now, hopefully, someone with a lot more knowledge can come along and make it all a lot easier than I just did. My comments are not based on experience with fitting necks in this manner. It's based on a lot of past experience making small pieces of wood out of larger ones.
