FRETS.NET

Hello-

I have an older 12 string Epiphone that I am restoring.  Not an expensive acoustic but one that I remember had good sound from way back in the early 70's as I recall.   While checking neck flatness, I decided to remove the truss rod to see why I could not get more relief from it.   The truss rod removed fairly easily except some of the tape that was on it.  When I removed the rod nut from the headstock and pulled the rod from the heel, a small steel flat piece size approximately .125 x .25" x .50" also came out.

Does anyone know what this little metal piece is for and where it goes? I'm guessing that it is bow shim or stop? See pics attached.

Looks like you've beaten the panel!

Yea, and that was my first post!

Found the answer though by fishing around a little.  If anyone cares, the small metal piece holds the end of the truss rod up at the headstock end of the neck.  This also allows the truss rod nut to center wihen screwing it on. I just bonded the metal piece back to the center of the square truss rod box on the wood inboard of the nut.  Now I can go back to finishing the frets.
