Hi Russell , Im an Aussie too , in Charlestown near Newcastle . I mainly repair, but have made 3 acoustics , and various necks and bodies and about 6 lap dogs.I have noticed your comments and you seem to know your stuff , I have been wondering what your main line of work is ?I'm into repairs 6 days a week, I also fix amps .Be nice to hear from you. Len Biglin

Russell , thanks for the intro , I also am an electronics tech. but with my work being mainly tubes and guitars I'm probly a bit out of date!My CRO blew up the other day ! smoked out my shed but at least it was the shitiest piece of gear in there.I'm looking on e-bay now and dont need much for audio work.I spray pre-cat laquer , not sure if it is truly nitro ? from Wattyl or Mirotone .Also I just tried some Timbalac from a local place , the sealer really blushed but the top coat was good and a good colour match too.I may contact you in search of parts or schematics ( my computer freaked out and dumped all my schems. and wont reload the backup ! ) God I hate modern digital crap.Len
  • Russell Vance

Yep, Ok, Wattyl and Mirotone are products I have experience with and neither of them are satisfactory - Wattyl had a pure nitro product (A8) which was a shocker (yellowed and crazed) and Mirtone (cat and pre-cat) tends to being too thick and 'plastic' no matter what - I have used Becker Acroma catalysed lacquer which is a better choice but still not a straight nitro. Durabond paints in Brookvale Sydney (02) 99050811 has been my manufacturer of choice for 6 years now and has been a superb supplier of all things Nitrocellulose - including sanding sealers, various degrees of satin/mat/gloss and custom pigmented nitro colors along with bulk premium thinners/wash thinners etc. Hard to beat Don (the paint chemist) and his team up there and good service and product is worth talking about. I am hooked up with a Amp service and may be able to help out with replacement schematics if you get in a bind. Rusty.

Rusty, I sincerely hope I didn't offend with my "dirty POME" and "clever enough by half" comments. Please ascribe to temporary insanity over the thought of pore filling soft surfaces.

    Best regards,
    Bob

    Russell,
We have watched closely the fires in Australia.......just sending you all there our best wishes.....
  • Russell Vance

Thankyou very much for your consideration, we were not in the firing line this time thankfully - it is quite an experience to have darkness in the middle of the day and the whole sky turn deep ocher red as has happened here before. But, bushfires down here are natures way of reminding us of her awesome power and beauty - it also reminds us that we don't own this land we are only borrowing it for a little while. Thanks again comrade.

hey Rusty i have a question about hooking up my guitar direct to a home stereo for a customer in his home via home stereo not a amp we want to plug right in to the wall and feed into the home stereo and here it through the house theater speakers ?any ideas
  • FRANK

Hi Russell I understand you really know electronics .today I got one I have no schematic for was wondering if you might help me ? it s a Lefty strat and so it is loaded with a Duncan stk-s2n in the N with 4 conductor wire .1 single antiquity in the center position but a Di Marzio 4 conductor wiring in the bridge .. I want to come up with a way to push pull the neck and bridge could I just use 1 push pull for the Duncan and the Di Marzio utilizing all 3 pots and a standard all parts 5 way strat switch enabling the player to choose either stack or single coil mode ...Or do i need 2 push pulls .I have had a bad head ache all day thinking about this and hope you can shed some Light .
