Thanks, Frank. Gather from reading around the edges that you're recovering from a quad bypass? Heal well, and thanks for taking the time. Missed you at the GAL, saw Alex there and talked about Tru Oil and finishes w him.

    Blessings,

    Barbara

You may notice that I also posted in the forum -- I asked you first, and then, reading others posts on your page, concluded that you could easily still be recovering from surgery, so I posted in the forum as well. Thanks again.

    Hi Frank,

I haven't visited Frets for some considerable time and two nights ago recommended it to a friend. I thought I'd check it out again myself and find it has all changed! I became a member hoping I would be able to read all those wonderful gems of luthier advice which were in list form and easy to navigate. Do they still exist and can I view them?

Thanks and I hope you are well,

    Ed Reed

    Hi Frank,
The difference between FRETS.COM & FRETS.NET passed me by as so many things do these days!
    Many thanks and take care,

Took me just over a year & I still don't know why it worked this time!

    Keep up the good work!

    Mr. F -

Is the rotary planer you referred to as the "chucker" happen to be the Craftsman carbide tipped rotary planer for radial arm saws ( model # 9  29513) ?  I have had one for many years and never had a problem with it. I did modify the cutter to make it safer, more precise, and repeatable. Are you familiar with this tool?

I hope you are doing well.

Thank You for making my daily life more interesting.

    Best Regards,

    Hi Frank,

You make an excellent point of the disparities in tension when alternate tuning is used. I also figure that the first four strings are the ones that get pulled the most, and perhaps it can even out the tension with the bass E,A.

I'll check in at Gryphon to see if I can get the guitar tweeked (re-set-up)while I shop, and or do lunch in your neighborhood. The B string is off a bit off.

    Thank you,

    Henry

Hi Frank, Just joined frets.net yesterday. Would you have any info on a gibson A series mandolin circa 1904 No 3267 as this mandolin may have passed through your hands possibly as a repair job. I would like to know if any work has been done to this mandolin and its approx value as it has been offered to me for sale.

I like your site and have been playing mandoline for over 30 years, currently playing a Fylde Lucetta. please reply to soharty@yahoo.co.uk

Hi Frank, You recently posted a comment on finishing in which you said that you never used vinyl sealer but used shellac as a sealer coat before applying lacquer. Can you explain why no vinyl sealer?

    Hello Frank:

I really enjoyed your site frets.com, I visited it a couple times a week, and It is my favorite site on the web. My question is do you have any idea when it will be back on line. I really

look forward to visiting the site again.

    Thanks Jerry Banfield

FRETS.COM was down only for a day or so during the transfer to the server at NetworkSolutions.  It has been running normally, and should continue to.  Do reload your browser page to make sure you're not reading "cache" copy.

    Frank,

A few years ago, I came upon Frets.com while building cigar box guitars. Since then, I have come back to your luthiers tips over and over to glean some really great ideas and instruction on guitar building.

This Kay archtop project guitar of mine has be going back to your pages more and more to learn the howto's I need to fix this beauty.I'm having to reference neck removal and reseating, fretting (more than I know already), repair and finishing. I am confident that this Kay will come out stunning if I keep in mind what you wrote.

Thank you for your willingness to share your knowledge.

Hi Frank, I am trying to put together an 'air harness' to prevent finish damage when steaming off a neck.  Your description on the Frets. Com site(using adjustable cooling hoses) is very helpful.  That rig uses compressed air, but I seem to remember your posting a description using a shop vac for the air supply- is that correct, and, if so,  where can I find that description?

Thanks for two great sites, Dave Richard, Corinth, VT

  • Frank Ford

No real description needed - I just made a little adapter from 1-1/2" PVC pipe to use as a manifold and connected those flexible hoses to it.  The flow from the output of my shop vac gives more CFM, so it works better than the air compressor.

No problem Frank. And thanks for a truly amazing site!

    Hi Frank.

I'd like to lodge a formal complaint against the user registered as RETROROD.

He has been making personal attacks & insults against me.  His behavior is unbecoming to this forum.

Granted, we all have professional disagreements occasionally, but he crossed the line with his personal (not professional) insults and attacks.

I suggest he be issued a 'warning' or (hopefully) be banned from further participation on this forum.

    Sincere thanks,

    Paul

  • Paul Verticchio

    Thanks so very much Frank.

After a good night's sleep & rest, may I ask you to disregard my request for de-registration?

Thanks for your words of encouragement.  I'm working with my physician to manage my ailment.  It's especially frustrating as it's onset happened so quickly.  I went from 60 to 0 in a matter of weeks. Oh well, so goes life(:

I'm very sorry to hear about your recent health & driving issues.  My "day job' career was in the public sector traffic safety field.  What you experienced is pretty common AND can be overcome. The heck with the machinery; I'm happy to hear you're doing well now.

Thank you again, sincerely.  I'm going to be ultra selective about my responses from now on.

With the utmost respect & appreciation,

    Paul (:

    Frank,

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you talking with me this morning about my Martin guitar kit project. After speaking with you I feel I can move forward with fitting the neck, applying the lacquer finish, attaching the neck to the body and then fretting the fingerboard. Both myself and John (the doctor who is building a kit as well) benefited from your generous gift of information. We are very lucky to have access to you and your years of experience. Thank you so much. Long live Gryphon!    Regards, Doug Scranton

Ill try to keep this short and gush free, since youre obviously a busy guy: several years ago I bought myself a Jack the Gripper, which is ingenious. Nearly a year ago, I discovered frets.com, which is so useful and cool :P. Shortly after that I found the pages depicting your manufacture of Jack the Gripper, and was so ecstatic to learn that I have a tool you made with your own hands! Very awesome. I was gonna finish the handle and make it all shiny, but now that I know you made it, Im leaving it unadulterated and unfinished so it can get dirty and look like the honest hardworking tool its meant to be :).

    Many thanks, youre quite inspiring.

    Hi Frank,
I just dropped you a line via Facebook but would like to cut to the chase and ask how you managed to inlay the neodymium magnets into the Chinese surface plates?
Did you just use a drill press and matching diameter masonry bit and then epoxy the magnets a little bit above the surface of the marble? It's brilliant and I can't believe I never thought if doing that myself! Would you mind telling me how thick and what diameter of magnets you used. I once installed rare earth magnets on a jig to hold a steel straight edge from falling but because they were too big it was a hassle to remove that straight edge and I had to scale down the size of the magnets until they were "just right" good hold and not too tight. Thanks for everything you do and share with everyone. I always come away inspired and smarter!
  • Miles Jones

Hi Frank, what are the ground rules for posting on my own profile page?
For example is it cool to promote my repair shop (Fret Works) and school or no. I don't want to violate any rules and get punted. Thanks

Hope you are well Frank. I miss you updates to Frets Machining page.

Hey Frank, I was wondering if you can help through something. I'm doing a complete re-bind on an Old Country Gent. I've done a handful of these at this point using weld-on with great results as far as securing the binding goes but am left with some touching up to do (on the wood portions) as the weld-on attacks the finish pretty aggressively.

My question is what do you think of using Titebond on a large re-bind like this? Ive used it for smaller separations on Martins but never on an entire re-bind. Do you think it will be a strong enough hold for an entire re-bind?

I got your package today. When you get a sec, I would love to bend your ear again.

Just wondering if I've had my comments taken off.

Not sure why I'm not seeing them.

I've been trying to update my email, but the verification email never arrives. I clicked on the help options which took me to a ning.com address but the page would not load.

    Frank,

Do you sell a dvd of your "Of Interest to Luthiers" pages. I love them and am inspired by them and would not like a future without being able to reference them.

  • Michael Burton

Hey Frank! It was great to actually speak to you on the phone the other day. I was the feller that called all the way from Newfoundland, Canada. Loved the Frank's Cranks. Here is an idea for ya. Ever thought of maybe designing a Deluxe Crank that has a tip for interchanging the winder heads? Some sort of snap in attachment to interchange between the different sizes? I would definitely be up for buying something like that!

    Cheers!

    Mike

You showed a video of making your string winder and I cant find it any more.

Also where do you find the acrylic ?

thanks for all the lathe videos.
