Hey John - I have tried something like that (random notes, discard offal, explore remainder) which is fun because your mind or fingers will sometimes go to familiar patterns and what you want is something different.The only composition I have done was with a midi sequencer - which was similar - I would just turn the pitch knob until it didn't sound awful, pick a duration and go to the next note. It sounds great, but I can't play it myself :)
