Well, that little machine is really very simple - it's a pair of linear slides stacked at ninety degrees with a little table on top. So, as I move the table around it maintains alignment, but can go anywhere in two dimensions. The router is held on an independent vertical slide, so it can move up and down, maintaining alignment with the stylus. As I trace around an object with the stylus, the cutter follows the same path, carving a full size duplicate as it goes.

I've used both a Bosch laminate trimmer and an air turbine for power. No I didn't have a cheap source for the bearings - I paid a freakin' fortune for them. . .

The air turbine is much quieter, but I don't have a big enough air compressor where the tool is located now, so I switched to the router.
