I just received a Gibson LGO. Plastic bridge to be replaced, bridge plate repair, and two braces missing on the bottom near the neck block. Where may I go to find specifications to build the braces? Thanks in advance to those replying.

Lee, I would imagine that the specs are the exact same as the other braces on the back, measure those and you should be good to go.

I agree. Gibson braces were generally 1/4" wide and 1/2" tall. The only trick here is radiusing them and then getting them in.

Gibson's braces fell out often, because they weren't always glued in that well!

Just curious to know if you're removing the back to do this? Hope you're replacing w/wood bridge...why are the braces missing? What's your approach?

Hi Tim and thanks  for replying. I plan on replacing the plastic bridge with a  rosewood  bridge. The bridge plate is tore up but I think using stewmacs bridge  saver should work. As to why the braces are missing, the owner  doesn't know. Had  it for years and is passing on to his daughter.  The daughter has been playing it  on gigs the way it is currently-never  changed the strings and the bridge pins  proved it. She wants to  be able to use it the last week in February. The first  thing I  plan on doing is getting the bridge and bridge plate replaced and  repaired.

I've tried several times to upload pics but for some reason the text gets posted but the pics don't. I'll keep trying to post the pics. -Lee

Looks easier than imagined..good luck!!

Thanks Tim!

Look at the weather checks in that finish.  If lacquer has to check (and it will), that's how you want it to do it.

Beautiful!!!!

Could we see some "after" pic's when it's done, Lee?

Thanks for sharing these pic's,

Paul

Lee,

GAL has plans for a '37 L-00 for $18 or if you want you can down load Christophe Grellier's well drawn plan for a '40 L-00 from here.

I know your fixing a newer model but I don't think it would matter too much. Barring using those plans you can probably get a good read on the width from the "shadow" lines left by the original braces and profile from the remaining braces.

Hi Ned,

Thanks for the info. I went to Christophe Grellier's site and got the plan. Now on to making braces! -Lee

An L-00 is a very different guitar than an LG-0, which has a different top shape, and is ladder braced. See my post above about Gibson braces. You don't need plans for a different guitar. Radiusing the braces is important, as is keying them into the lining at the ends.

Regarding the bridge, there's no after-market replacement worth the money. You need to make one from scratch. I have a procedure you can look at here

Thanks, Paul. I was aware of the differences but I believe that drawings I indicated will reflect back braces very close to the dimension you posted and since it was back braces Lee was interested in I didn't think it mattered. Thanks for insuring that everyone realized that what I suggested aren't actually drawings of this model of guitar and that in some ways they are radically different.
