I have an archtop with a floating magnetic pickup, attached to the pick guard. It's wired to a volume pot and then to the end pin jack. It is a PITA when needing to work on either the pickup or the guitar with the pick guard off because the shielded lead to the jack keeps everything together so it won't separate from the guitar.
Is there any downside to putting a mini-plug in the lead from guitar to pickguard so they can be separated? Sonic? Electronic? Hum? anything else?
Thanks,
Larry

It won't hurt a thing, Larry.
I do this often with both mag and pz elements (pups). It makes "the next visit to the shop" MUCH more enjoyable for me. You'll want to use 3.5mm connectors, not 1/4" connectors.
Don't go cheap on the plug/jack hardware. I use Switchcraft products exclusively for this procedure. If G&H made 3.5mm connectors, I'd use them. Neutrik is a great second choice. Radio Shack components will get the connection made but will fall apart on you in the future.
Best of luck :)
Best of luck.
