I am going to look at some lumber soon. Old mahogany. I was wondering if I can get some quick help about how to select wood for a neck - quater sawn, what about the grain angle? I guess just general advice of what to look for... Thanks!
Hi Micha,
The grain angle should be 90 degrees to the face and back of the neck. lllllllllllll
I have seen a few descent necks where the grain is slightly rift /////////// , but preferably you would want it to be quartered at 90 degrees to the face. There would be less chance of twisting, etc. with perpendicular grain. I'll try attaching a photo that shows a quarter sawn mahogany neck, note the grain direction in the heel.
Cheers,
Cal
