Hi I picked up a 63 Gibson J 50 as a project guitar.   The guitar has various cracks and loose bracing, but most of this I can handle. The question I have has to do with the finish. A previous owner apparently had glued a piece of wood in the area from the bridge to the end of the guitar.  Some of the finish is off all the way to bare wood.  Of even more concern is the shadow left. Is there any way to minimize this?  I don't mind the guitar looking old and weathered as long as it's in good stable working condition but this shadow will be really noticeable from across a room. thanks to anyone with suggestions

A couple things. I'm not sure I have the skills to strip and refinish a top. Again it would cost a lot to have pros do it. Wouldn't the shadow also be into the wood itself so even if it was refinished might it not still show?  Is there a kind of spray on lacquer I could learn to use or is it painted on? I really don't know. I do like the old patina and the color that's there. I'm looking for ways to minimize that contrast between the finish that was exposed and the part that was under the piece of wood that had been glued on.

Did you see my last post Patrick?

Yes I just saw. It. thank you. It must have been posted about the same time I was writing. That's what I was afraid of- the wood is different colors-not the finish. I'm wondering if I can finish just that area with a tinted finish that would lessen the contrast.  I'd like suggestions on  what to use and how to apply it if I go that way.

Well of corse you have to shade it in  but you have to be equiped to do that .So you are going to have  spraiying equipment and mix in the right shading to get it all the same color.
