I'm making a new bridge saddle for my acoustic and I was wondering if I should slot it or not. The old one was plastic and it chipped right were the strings sat over the years. Looks like there were in fact slots that were cut into the saddle.

Should I leave the saddle plain or slot it? What's the traditional method? I have gone through Frank's saddle articles and he doesn't mention it anywhere.

When I work with modern acoustics that have corian or graphite saddles, they look like they weren't cut at the factory, but over time strings leave a footprint. In my case the material is bone.

Thanks!

The saddle should not be slotted. The profile should be round unless you're attempting to compensate the saddle and even then the top should be round.

Thank you very much, sir! This resolved a certain problem with this guitar, as it sounded very muffled before, not present at all. Now it is a lot more live.
