I've picked up an early '70s solid-wood Yamaki F-150 acoustic in auction, with a  back-bowed neck.  The truss-rod adjustment is an allen-head screw just inside the sound-hole, but it is hardly moving and I'm guessing it's rusted up.   I'm reluctant to risk damage by trying to unscrew it, considering that unless it is double-acting, it won't help.  Without major effort I can bend the neck into an acceptable relief.

Should I persevere with the trussrod (is it likely to be double acting?) or try clamping the neck to a 4x2 from behind with some blocks and some gentle heat?  Any suggestions welcome!

There's really no risk in trying to loosen the rod. It's not likely a 2-way rod, but that doesn't matter if it's just plain too tight. Loosen it and let string tension pull a little relief into the neck.
Greg, thanks for giving me the courage to do the right thing! Didn't know which would give out first - my wrist, my nerve or the trussrod. It made some noises that should never come out of a guitar but finally came loose, and neck is now under control! Thanks again.
You bet. Some doofus figured cranking that rod mercilessly was the way to get electric-guitar-action on the poor thing.
