experimental 1968 Vox Bass Guitar a customer wants me to install a jazz pickup in a Guitar not designed for this pick/up my feelings are that I will be cutting and causing structural damage .here is what he wants a jazz p/u in the bridge with his single coil in the neck I will be cutting into his bass brace and his other brace to fit the new p/u I want your Opinion please I told this Guy its your call if you want this done or not but I would like your feed back please .this Guitar has braces much like a Violin s Bass brace Arch top Guitar and cutting through two of its braces is not what I had planed .

I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. This kind of work (in my experience) usually lead to unsatisfied customers, some hacked-up instruments and bad dreams. Whenever this sort of thing ends-up on my bench, I tell the customer "That's a fantastic idea, and what a learning experience for YOU." I encourage him/her to think long and hard about how to proceed, what tools to acquire, etc. Then I tell him/her that I'll be here to assist if you really get stuck. In other words, I try to send them away but make 'em (a). feel good about being turned-down and (b). willing to call me next time for something else!

Having said that, you really may want the job, in which case you might think about front-to-back supports (much like a violins' soundpost) on either end of the brace cuts, to provide the missing support.

Or you might tell the guy if he wants a jazz pickup to go buy a Jazz bass, and save everyone the requisite heartache.
