Kay Barney Kessel truss rod question....

Hey All,

I currently have a 50's kay barney kessel with a broken truss rod nut, which I was able to fix by shortening the spacer in the heel. For future reference does anybody know if that particular truss rod is anchored in the neck wood by the nut? Or can it simply be pulled out from the dovetail end? I originally tried that and it would not move. Are they glued in?

Edit: This guitar has the truss rod adjustment in the bottom of the heel.
