More Gibson J 40 Fun; Anyone ever seen this wacky neck joint before?
Gotta see it to believe it.... This guitar has a 3 piece laminated neck and as you can see in the picture there's a 3 piece laminated tang protruding thru a channel cut on the top of the neck block and no doubt glued to the underside of the sound board. How on earth can a neck reset (which this guitar needs) be performed on an instrument such as this? Any thought or experience with such a beast?

The infamous tenon under the top. Cleanly done as well, Not. Never done one as a reset but I have removed the board and planed a new set into the neck. Seemed like a safer bet to me and the result was good after a little trimming of the fretboard to neck shank connection. Keep us posted as to how you handle this nightmare. Oh and good luck.

The idea of conversion to a bolt-on neck is looking better all the time!

Bolt on is a good option as well, so long as there is sufficient heal thickness. More pics?

Yea early 70's Gibson, it should be lots of meat. One caution though, this joint is probably a mortise and tenon not dovetail so don't recess the bolt heads into the headblock or you'll be relying only on the strength of the tenon joint.
