Just got a Squier Telecaster to work on. Its an old 1998 model, and overall a good quality instrument. The fault is that the D and G strings are quieter, and have less sustain, than the others.
Having a close look, the frets are poorly seated. Tight at either end, but not all the way in down the centre. All exactly the same! I wonder if Squier used a 7.25'' radius caul rather than a 9.5'' to seat them?
So the notes don't sound as well on the 'loose' centres, but work fine for the E,A B and top E strings.
Trouble is, if I use a fret hammer to knock the middle of the frets in properly, its going to make the ends pop out! But a refret isnt a cost effective fix...
