Hello

My name is Rasmus Erlemann. I'm a luthier from Estonia.
I came into possession of an old Stauffer guitar. It has been restored but unfortunately not correctly, finish has been replaced by nitrocellulose and it has a new wider neck (Old neck has been kept fortunately)
How much would the repairwork by top notch vintage guitar repairman come out (remove
old finish, apply authenthic finish, reattach the old neck, touch up
some inlay work.). Very loose esimate would do fine. I would do it myself but the guitar is too valuable and I usually don't do repairs.

Could you identify the year? maker and maybe the price of this instrument

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Can't give you any info on the guitar regarding dates and maker, but I can say that a complete restoration would be a huge undertaking that in my opinion could become less than cost affective. The owners willingness to pay more than the guitar is worth is the real question.

Welcome Rasmus. I don't know much about Stauffier Guitars and less about the cost of restoring it but I have to say that this is a cool old guitar.

What's the point of the restoration? Is your intent to play it or try to return it to a more original form for the collector market? You mentioned reattaching the neck. Is it loose now or does it need to come off for a reset?

The point of restoration is to restore it to as authenthic state as possible. It depends on the value of the guitar but I would put it on the collector market most likely.

Unfortunately the guitar has been equipped with new neck. The new neck would have to be removed and the old one reattached.

Hello Rasmus .. on your side of the pond, Willi Henkes, in Germany, is the leading authority on old Martins, and an excellent luthier.  He would give you a definitive report/estimation for the repair of your guitar..a guitar that appears worth the effort and expense..Tom
