While I was searching for a master builder to teach me, I bought a couple of books on making specialized planes and hand tools. I knew I wanted to be a luthier anyway, and commercial planes in this day are shotty unless they are specifically for guitar or violin making.
Some of the plans were from some old woodworking magazine articles. Also, brass is no problem to work with a scroll saw and sander.
