FRETS.NET

I have made my share of acoustic guitars, but was always wondering what the purpose of making a body with a taper in the depth-- IE...  drednaughts are 4-3/4 inches deep at the tail, and 3-3/4 at the heel....

I was wondering if anyone ever made a dred. with the same depth allong the body.

Classical guitars are made with the same depth or maby 1/4 inch smaller at the neck.

Anyone with input -- give up some info and I will try to understand the reasoning...

Hi Donald.

I am NOT a builder but I share your curiosity.   I'm glad you brought the subject to the forum (:

IF the inside of a guitar is like a "room"in terms of [sound wave] acoustics; the object is to avoid parallel surfaces.  This greatly reduces standing waves in the lower registers, which cancel each other out.

That's just my theory to get the discussion going.  I hope one of our world-class builders on the site will give us the straight scoop.

Best of luck & Peace

Hi Paul that makes sence- My son in law has a sound studio that I helped him make and none of the measurments

(height, width, length) are divisable with each other if ya know what I mean...

Peace,Donald

Hi Tim - Under most condidions the top is a 90 degree angle to the head block and the bottom is whats tapered from tail to head block if I'm not mistaken, so the sides are tapered on the back  and not the top-- and the neck angle is usually 1-1/2 degrees to accomidate string angle to the bridge.

I understand what you are saying Tim - however I'm still wondering what the science is to a tapered body on a dred..... ???????
From what I understand it Donald the taper is there to bring the sound up to the sound hole. And the differents in the depth form one end to the other is for the same perpose to give you the volume of air. That is the way I see it anyway. Bill.''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

What William said AND it apparently aids in sound projection. That is what I have been told on other Forums by folks who should know...
