FRETS.NET

Hi,

my name is Stefano, I'm Italy based and I would like to make you a question : Is possible to lower the action on acoustic guitar filing the frets that are buzzing?? I'm speaking about guitar with action at XII fret of 1,6mm (0.12-0.52), in this way could be possible to have a more lower action that 1,5 mm, when playin' a lot around the XII fret is really better.
Many Thanks in advance.
Stefano

YES THANKS STEFANO you should let a pro do it there is a neck adjustment involved fret work then nut and saddle work needed most likely and when i say fret work they all need work trust me this is the only way to get a great action at the 12th or the 17th I check the 17th on steel strings Cheers PHB
Stefano that sounds very tight. Not enough room for a string to vibrate.Easier to fit a new bridge, surely.Classicals have a bit more room than "Acoustics" but 1.5 is a bit extreme.
Stefano, maybe I haven't properly understood. Are all the strings buzzing all over the fretboard or just some string at the end of the fretboard? Consider that the standard regulation on Martin guitars is 2.5/3.0 mm on the treble side and 3.0/3.5 on the bass side at the 12th fret. I usually lower them at 2.0/2,5 for the high E and 2.5/3.0 for the low E and it's very comfortable (mind that I use 0.13/0.56 gauge). I can't even imagine how can a string play without buzzing at 1.5 mm!!
IMO lowering the frets is something one can do just if they're not properly set, and the risk is to have a too flat fret surface, that means you can't obtain a precise intonation when fingering. Instead I prefer working on nut, SADDLE and truss-rod. Unless the problem is about the neck angle.
Good luck
Antonio
