I have seen this on a couple of Japaneese guitars, this one is on an Ibanez about 1970. Probably model 356. I wonder what the reasoning behind this can be! ;-)

Should have used intention or purpose! I'm from Sweden...

That was a joke. I can't imagine any reasoning was involved at all. A found piece?

"Hey look what I found in the trash behind the cabinet shop. I bet we can use this as a back brace!"

Well. It IS a strange thing indeed. God knows why someone thought it had a place in a guitar!

Just a decorative element. The strength of a brace is in it's triangular profile, which has been left intact with the material removed from the brace in you're image. Takes a bit more time to do this type of detailing, which would ultimately get into a factories bottom line profits and probably why it is uncommon.

An exercise in "turd polishing" , Ive never liked an Ibanez yet .
