Truss rod pushed down into the guitar neck

Hello, I have a Oscar-schmidt (by washburn) OE30 SHB guitar with a stripped truss rod nut and the truss rod has somehow moved further into the neck whilst trying to use a tool to grab the stripped out nut.  

 

Anyone here have a clue as to why a truss rod would be able to move into the neck like this?  I think the stripped nut is not hard thing to fix but the rod seems to be more problematic.   Am I right will I have to have someone take the fretboard off to fix this issue?

 

I posted the best picture I could get of the nut in it's current position.  The black area by the nut is where it used to be.  It's moved about 1/2" into the rod cavity from where it should be.

And isn't trussrod replacement along the lines of rootcanaling?

I had the same problem with a Hagstrom guitar with the truss rod in a aluminum channel. The problem was at the other end of the truss rod. It had a threaded rod that was about an 1-1/4" long. As the truss rod was being tightened, it would cause the threaded stopper to slip past the threads inside the channel of the truss rod assembly witch was also threaded causing the stopper to go further towards the heel of the neck. I removed the fingerboard and repositioned the threaded rod and anchored the threaded stopper with thick super glue, which froze it into place. Cleaned up the fingerboard and neck, reglued the fingerboard back on, did a little fret work and fixed the problem. When I glued the fingerboard back on, I glued it back with a little relief in the neck seeing the aluminum channel was in a straight route in the neck.
