Upright bass ebony fingerboard

Hello
I had to fix some cracks in a upright bass ebony fingerboard. After the repairs I had to do some
sanding which showed a brownish and black color. I used some leather stain to even out the color. Now my question is, do I add any finish to the ebony fingerboard to protect the stain from wearing off?

No finish, just restain if needed in the future.
