Once I scribed the abalone diamonds, I removed them and, with bits donated by my dentist (!), chucked in my dremel, I hollowed out the cavities for them. Then I dropped a bit of superglue into the cavity and tapped the diamonds home using a wood tapping block. After the superglue dried, I sanded the fboard down flush.
I did the same with the plastic position markers for the side of the fingerboard.
Then I chucked the router bit into the router for the daunting step of routing a ledge for the binding to sit in.
Here, it is just started:
And here it is completed:
I don't know whether to orient the binding strips I have with the white holly wood edge up or down. For the top, I think the white edge should go down and the rosewood bead should be up, to provide contrast. For the back, I'm undecided and need some other opinionated input. Either the white holly wood will be banding the rosewood back, providing a stark contrast around the perimeter, or it will be separating the rosewood binding from the rosewood sides, with the rosewood part of the binding laying against the rosewood of the back. OTOH, I may use the ebony/holly binding I have to do the both trims with contrast in both planes. What do you think?
Above, rosewood binding; below, ebony binding against back, and top.
