A friend has an early 70s D-35S. Pickguard has pulled off, but the real challenge is the clear contact paper(!) some thoughtful soul applied to the finish above and below the pickguard. Suggestions on removal (gentle heat?careful application of naptha?) would be appreciated. And yes, there is damaged finish under the contact paper.

It will come up with a little naphtha wicked under the edge. Peel slowly and add more solvent as you go; you can feel as it lets go.

Yup. Naptha. Wonderful stuff. Countless uses.
A heat gun would probably work too. Just be careful not to overheat so you don't warp the guard. I've used a heat gun on labels where I work and it seems to do the job pretty well.
