Hey Luthier friends. I am about to build a tiple but have had little luck finding the right tuning machines. Should I buy 12 string guitar machines and cut one on each side off? Help me out Frank!

If you're thinking of the Martin tiple (based on the Cuban, I believe: 10 strings in four courses) cutting one from each of a set of twelve would work fine. Or build the Columbian which uses all twelve in 4 courses. I build the Puerto Rican tiple which has five strings and use individual mini tuners (or even violin pegs).
One thing you could consider is using straight through pegs, like they did in the 1920s and before. NOW, we have "Peg Heds" which are styled to look exactly like wood friction pegs, but they have internal gearing - 4:1, that makes them fine for light strings:
