I've looked at the StewMac brace jack a few times and thought about making something like it. I woke up with a clear picture in my head of how to do it with stuff I had kicking around my shop.

Parts are:

machine head

bolt

t nut

plastic pipe

wire from a hung ceiling

piece of a brake cable sleeve

1/4" mdf

magnet

It's an insert from a control knob with a couple extra allen screws, I'm hoping somebody here comes up with a better way to attach the cable to the machine head.

Was the tuner button held on by a screw?

It was plastic, I cut it off with side cutters.

I"m thinking that if you used a machine head with a button held on by a screw then you could screw one end of a threaded rod into the tuner and the other end into an aluminum spacer, leaving room on the other end of the spacer to attach a cable.
