Needing a source for some thin "fiberboard" to re-surface a headstock. (Maybe 'fiberboard' is the wrong term)  It's the material manf. like Gibson uses.

Many thanks!!

I have read somewhere that holly veneer is what Gibson used in vintage stuff at least.

That seems to be the consensus at the mylespaul forum.

$17.20 for 35"x 8" x0.6 from LMI under veneers/ colored veneers

It doesn't mention the type of wood only that "White is a natural maple color." I guess it doesn't matter.

Some Chinese importer has rosewood headstock veneers 3 for $8 with free shipping. I could just use one of those and shoot it black.

Gibson used wood (holly,  I recall as was said early in the thread) facing for a while and probably do it for some of their vintage stuff (I also recall) , but generally it's all fibre if they use a facing.   The fibre is finished with a black shader to get it to look half-decent.

Use maple or cherry as alternatives, you are going to dye it anyway, right? Rusty.

I use the black fiber board from LMI, and work it exactly the same way I would ebony.  No problem gluing, sanding, finishing.  Color looks good, and it makes a nice solid peghead veneer.

Early Gibsons had dyed hardwood peghead veneer (holly?  maple? ) that was black all the way through.

Some later ones were holly as well.  Those veneers were glued on with no stain, and inlay was done with black filler.  Then the white peghead was stained or painted black before clear coating.  Strange way to go, if you ask me.
