Paste Wax

All those lovely stewmac fretting dvd's seem to suggest the use of paste wax when using glue to aid in the cleanup afterwards. Does anybody know if Beeswax or an alternative is acceptable, as none of my local DIY stores stock Paste Wax. Any help is greatly appreciated,

Simonize floor wax is past wax. No one uses it on hardwood floor anymore. Old school.

Hard to fathom that paste wax is all that difficult to find.... but I think almost any kind of wax would work well (how many words can start with a "w" and still make sense?!) But make sure there's no silicone in the ingredients, as silicone and guitars don't play well together.

I just went out to the shop and looked at what I've been using for years.... my brother gave me a can of it about 5 years ago and it will (apparently) last forever. I used to have a short leftover tube of ski wax that got used for everything. Lubing screws, nails, gears, whatever. It comes in different formulas. Now a neat block of canning parafin works pretty good. My friend finished his cabinets with paste wax and they are beautiful, but I think they will need some regular upkeep.

Pretty sure Minwax sells a version.

Did the StewMac DVD show the wax being used to help with cleanup after using cyanoacrylate or was it a water-based blue like Titebond? Makes a big difference. CA can have substantial solvent action such that a wax might not be much help.

Dan applies wax next to the fret. Then wicks in CA glue.

And, just remember.......brown packaging tape (the shiny thin plastic variety) has been used in the furniture trade for ions to cover up stuff that you don't want epoxy/titebond/CA to stick to - it goes on easy and comes off with the glue layer intact in most cases ( don't let the glue set rock hard otherwize you will need to score it with a blade to release the edge). When I'm fretting I use it to mask off the board when I'm using CA (the thicker variety) to set the frets.

I'm with Paul. A quick swipe with a small piece of blue paper shop towel with acetone works wonders. Gotta move fast.
