Sound port on an archtop?
I have a Tacoma archtop purchased back in the 90's, and I really like it. 17" LB, AAAAA solid spruce top (CNC carved), solid quilted maple b&s, floating passive humbucker, super-clean lines with no bling. I've played it a lot through an amp, but lately have gotten more interested in using acoustically which it is also built for. But . . .
Sitting across from a friend playing it, I love its unplugged sound. When I play it myself, I hear about half of that. I gather that this is in the nature of archtops; the sound comes together a couple feet in front of the instrument. However . . .
Sound ports seem to be turning up everywhere these days. In addition to flat-tops, I have seen one on a luthier-made arch-top mando. So, what about cutting one into the rim of my Tacoma? Does anyone have experience with sound ports in archtops? Any advice on adding one for the purpose of improving the player's listening experience?
