FRETS.NET

Hi, can anyone help me please?

I have a new Taylor T5z-12 string and although it is fitted with "mini" tuners, the headstock is shorter then the standard T5-12 and the tuner buttons are quite large (for "mini's") which combines to make tuning difficult and the use of a string winder nigh on impossible.

I cannot replace the tuners because the close proximity restricts the (normal) 45 degree set screw angle of most brands. (Some Grover mini's have an acceptable 90 degree set screw angle but the buttons are quite large, so no point in doing that).

Can anyone suggest where I might obtain true "mini" tuner buttons (round or kidney bean type) to fit the shaft of Ping mini tuners.

Cheers....Brian

Hi Brian!  On the Official Luthier's Forum there were a couple of guys who I believe are still there who made custom tuner buttons which is likely what you need since these are not an off the shelf thing IME.

I can't remember who was doing this but maybe post there that you need someone to make you some custom buttons and that might just get ya where you want to go.

PS:  David Farmer let us know that the Turbo winder is back on the market YAY!  I use mine 10 times a day and have for years.

Cheers Hesh, thanks for the tip; I did take a look; it looks like another very informative forum.

I have managed to source some (generic) suitable replacements with small buttons from Allparts UK who assure me they are every bit as good as the Ping's they're replacing.

Just out of interest, where does "Ping" hardware fit in the great scheme of things (compared with say Grover, Gotoh,  Wilkinson etc)?

Thanks for taking the trouble to respond Hesh.
