FRETS.NET

Hi guys. I consider myself fairly competent and experienced, but I got one that's stopped me. Patient is a 1980s Gibson 335 solid body (an ebay special). Customer is loyal, so I need to explore every option. Neck has .018 relief at the 8th fret WITH NO STRING TENSION and the truss rod as tight as I dare go (yes, I broke one years back). Several fairly bad cracks in the ebony fingerboard, telling me this girl's been exposed to excessive heat for a while. Thus, the bad neck upbow set. I think the first 4 frets were replaced at some time. Has the old lower, wide frets about .035 crown highth. Typical Gibson fingerboard binding "nubs" as Mr. Erlewine calls them. I could rip the frets out and plane/level the fingerboard, but with such bad upbow, I'm afraid the results will be less than satifactory. Any ideas?

going the correct direction with the truss rod ? you tightened it did you try loosening it i see this happen some times if they are duel truss rods ? just a thought you could in extream situations pull the finger board off flip the truss rod or simply replace it and put the same finger board back on i love to do it its a fun possess to do very informative i learned a lot about glue guitars and wood hope this gives you an idea
It's the standard one-way truss rod. I always take the nut off and lube it. Customer wants to keep it under $500, so fingerboard removal is out of the question. Thanks.
ill do it for 500$
Cris. have you thought of putting a thick piece of wood the length of the fret board and putting a 1\2" block under each end of the piece of wood and making your self a cull for the bottom of the neck in the centre and then clamp it up and put your wife's hair drier to it and heat it up real good. then cover it up to hold the heat in then keep doing that until you get it strate.I have had real good luck doing just that. You will have to place your blocks as to were you want it to bend. Good luck with your prodject. Bill.""""""" P.S don't forget to losen the T.R.
Thanks. I might just try that Bill.
wood has a property called creep this may work with a hair dryer lol please tell us if it works
