GIBSON FLYING V BODY / NECK ANGLE ??

just about to start a flying v project. plans i have are pretty good but need to know the angle of the neck relative to the body..  i'm told it should be 2 degrees but confirmation would be great. will be making it a thru-neck assembly. thanks in advance.  nick

I suspect you are going to need a bit more than 2 degrees.

To be sure you should get your bridge first, work out its minimum height above the face of the guitar including insert collars thumbwheels etc and then draw up a crossection  of the neck and body and set it up so that the line of the top of the frets meets the saddle at its lowest height.

This will be affected by the neck angle and other things such as fretboard thickness, fret height neck/body joint position etc.

I would not rely on an angle that anyone gives you, their design or components could be different and you don't want to end up having to recess a tunomatic or have it perched up really high

Hey Nick - The neck angle for a solid body depends on what you are going to use for a bridge.

If you use a fender style bridge then the neck pocket can be routed flat, but if you are going to use any thing like a Gibson style Nashville bridge then it will need to be angled up to as much as 3 degrees--

NOTE:  Do your homework before you attack the real thing..

When you say "thru-neck", do you mean a set neck or a true "neck through" construction?

Very good. That's how it was originally conceived, as was the SG.
