Flamed mapple with multiple stains on bare wood and varnishes. Considering you're asking multiple questions of this type, I strongly encourage you to have some books about finishing technique read.

is it true though that the blow tourched the wood to get this type of flame?

they sorry

and i have dan erilwines book on finishing it is helping me but would you reccomend any books more guitar finishing books?

I haven't done a finish like this on a guitar and I can't say for sure what they did but I really doubt that a blow torch or any other fire is involved. The stripping is probably a result of wood grain that is somewhat more porous than the lighter strip. It would have more to do with the way the wood is cut than the application of fire. I could be wrong but an open flame wouldn't mix well with the atmosphere of a finishing department.
