FRETS.NET

Hello

With the best of intentions, I polished my pretty new Gibson J45 with Virtuoso polish.  The back and sides came out great.  Unfortunately, the soft terrycloth towel I used for the top apparently had a piece of grit in it, and now I have oval & circular scratches all over the top.
I have tried mild abrasives (toothpaste, McGuire's Scratch-X 2.0) and they made the scratches less apparent, but I can still see them.  I think the darn thing is going to need to be sanded with very fine paper and buffed out again.  The scratches don't go through the finish, and I cannot feel them with a fingernail.  Is this something you guys at Gryphon can handle?  Unfortunately, I cannot leave the guitar with you for weeks to have it done, because I am moving out of the SF Bay Area at the end of May.  How fast could you turn it around?
Thanks
Michael

Mike,

You may want to call Gryphon directly.

This isn't the place to make that type of inquiry as this site IS NOT affiliated with their Service Dept or Retail Operation.

Damned if I do and damned if I don't.  On Gryphon, it says "Repair Questions? Contact Frank at Frets.com", and on frets.com it says:

If you have questions about fretted instrument repair
or construction, please visit my new (as of 8/2/08) forum:

As a moderator of that forum, I read it almost every day, and make frequent
contributions. AND, if you post your questions there, you'll have the attention
of a large group of qualified luthiers who can address a wide range of
topics including instrument design, construction, repair and maintenance!

Sure, the above works for discussing general solutions, repair techniques, construction theory, etc.  However, if you're wanting to contract a specific repair job with Gryphon, it might be best to call them directly at (650) 493-2131. They'll be open tomorrow morning at 10:30.

I'll be out of town tomorrow, but I will try to bring the guitar by there Tuesday or Wednesday for an in-person look-see.

Sorry to have gotten off on the wrong foot here with my first post.  I did go to Gryphon's site first, and it led me here through a circuitous route.  I thought I was doing the right thing, although it seemed strange to me.

Hi Michael-- I don't know how bad you want to get the scratches ot of the top of your guitar but

if you go to www.LMII.com and that a look at polishing materials I'm sure that they will be able to help you out.

just my two cents---

best of luck on correcting you're problem--

Peace, Donald

Well, it is a bit confusing, you're right.  Naturally, since I run this place, it is "affiliated" me and pretty much everything I do, including Gryphon.  But, a phone call is always best.  Give us a shout at the shop, and we can set up a time for  you to bring it in for a look.   Chances are good that we can take care of the problem with very little delay.   It's entirely possible that sanding won't be necessary, so it could be a quick job.

What Frank Say.  Call if there's any question or it's likely to be a time consuming job.

I live in Arizona but I go to Palo Alto for short visits to visit grandchildren several times a year. I've brought in smaller jobs that needed doing (including a one day turnaround on a Baggs Anthem pickup install) and have been treated with great work and quick turnarounds.  I'd get with them well in advance if it was a job that required a major block of time to perform, e.g. a refret.  It's likely that they could give you an appointment to slot you in.  But ask... .

Larry

I took two guitars to see Frank today.  He fixed the J45 and the other one for FREE.  The J45 looks better than it did when it left Bozeman. What a GUY!

Thanks, Frank!!
