I think I would contact graphtec for a custom system.

my friends from FB recommend Pick up the World ever heard of them ?

Hello Frank.

I checked out a bunch of manufacturer's sites.  It doesn't look like PUTW offers MIDI devices.

I agree with Pierre that Graphtech may be your best bet.  Also, it seems that RMC MIDI sensors/pickups are the current state-of-the-art for acoustic instruments.  In all cases, this will be a custom build for your instrument design.

For general direction, I'd contact Seymour Duncan and/or Jason Lollar for guidance & suggestions.

Sound like a very cool project.

Best of luck and, of course, we'd love to see pic's of the finished instrument,

Paul

While I worked at Godin guitars I repaired their midi output made by LR Baggs, Graphtech and RMC. Frank, I would say that RMC would be where I would start if I was building that 8 string.

Never mind pictures when you are finished, I would love to see the entire project documented! Do you have a digital camera you could do it with? Sounds like such a terrific project.
And a joyous Easter to you too Frank (:
