No idea, but I suspect it's the mother of all basses. The Larson brothers would look at that thing and say "DAAAAAAAMN, that's big."

Try contacting the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.

That is a bass tambutiza/tamburitca. It is eastern European in origin (Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia). I did a quick google search and found the contemporary instruments that are more guitarish. Some have Fender shaped peg heads. Leo said he based his design on the instruments he saw some Croatian musicians playing.

 

That will look great in your den, next to your Regal bass guitar.

Although I know nothing about it,my first impression was almost identical to Joshua as it it has a Russian like

adornment thingy and a soundhole akin to a balalaika.

Its called a berda, the bass member of the tambura family.
