How hot is too hot?

I just invested in a heat gun with digital temperature control, the accuracy of which I shall test before going much further.  Next on the agenda is a neck reset (conversion to bolt-on) on an…Continue

Epiphone FT147 Neck reset
12 Replies

I have a 1972 Epiphone FT147, dreadnought flat-top, MIJ (probably by FujiGen) which needs a neck reset. Couldn’t find anything on the net to help diagnose the neck joint, so took it to the vets for…Continue

Alternative to Weld-on #16?

Weld-on 16 seems to be the weapon of choice for fixing plastic binding, but I can't get it over here and Stewmac etc. can't ship it.  Tried epoxy, but I'm not happy with it, and clean-up is a…Continue

Maybe I shouldn't have bought it

This Yamaki was their top-end model in 1971, with gold Grovers and the world’s supply of MOP inlay. It's pretty unique. I'd hoped to fix it, but now I realise I have neither the experience nor the…Continue

I sawed the neck off, set the neck, rescrewed the bolt that was in there, and added another screw through an existing strap button to hold it together. I really can't think of a way to get that mess apart otherwise!

The glue on my guitar (and I say this with GREAT hesitation, since I have no idea what it in yours) seemed to go soft really fast. But those dowels were in deep, and nothing else worked.

I might have done a combination of heat and sawing, now that I think about it. It is a truly hideous job.

Yeah, I suspect that the bolt on saved them having to clamp the neck while the glue set - it is not a very functional bolt on it's own, sadly.

Sounds lovely, yes, the heel is flat against the guitar, no recess. I just used a wood screw for the button, but a bolt would probably be more stable and wiser.

Hi Ian,

I don't know if you remember me, you contacted me a couple of years ago about an old Washburn you wanted to do the neck reset.  You had seen pictures of me doing it on the Washburn forum, uploaded by SPT (the member, my customer).

Looking at your avatar, it seems you went ahead and did it!  How did  it go?

Cheers,

Thanks Ian,

We enjoy the challenge of it all.   I've always wanted to do something that is difficult - and building quality high end guitars pretty much fills that bill.    We will still keep our repair and maintenance business which is being built into the new factory.

tech@vancecustomguitars.com   will get me off web.  Rusty.
