Hello:

This is my first time posting here.

I am wondering if a Taylor Guitar supplied clear pickguard (permanent) can be safely applied to a guitar with a Nitro finish.

Any advice / information / comments would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Will

Like pretty much anything, it will have an effect on the finish.  The "younger" the finish when the guard is applied, the more pronounced the effect will be.

Now, it won't actually injure the finish much, but when/if you choose to remove it, you can count on the area underneath requiring at least a very light abrasive leveling followed by polishing.  Because that's generally such a minor amount of finish work, I tell folks not to worry about it at all.

Thanks very much for the reply.  Much appreciated.
I heard that after 95, Taylor stopped the lacquer and are now using a CA finish for more durability and improved tone.

I

ve only heard of CA finish for the neck ? Steve i Ray Vaughn started doing this years ago

There's the best place to work at the factory...C/A spray booth...hazmat city...

watch your eyes

They don't use CA for their finishes.  It's a UV cured polyester finish.

I should have been clear on this. I'm not putting it on a Taylor. It just happens to be pickguard I got from Taylor for another guitar, but did not use it at the time. I am going to use it on an Eastman - one that does have a Nitro finish.

thank you -

Will

You were clear, Will. Frank's reply is all you need to know. A pressure-sensitive guard will have an effect on nitro finish, but it is usually just a minor imprint and not hard to sand and buff. The newer the finish and the longer the guard is on there the more effect you can expect.

Will,

Sorry if I gave you the impression that you were unclear.

I posted the Taylor info to stop the "he said/she said/I heard/I thought" misinformation on Taylor's finishes.

The biggest "boogeyman" of the internet is misinformation.  It tends to become "wrong facts accepted by many to be the truth" if not corrected.

Play well & have fun,

Paul

Not at all... and I apprecaite the information very much.
