Now that is just plain clever!  I especially like the clamping method on the drill press, and the reuse of the screwdriver as a handle.  Did you turn a thread on that? - I guess glueing that joint would not be so good in a tool that is going to get really hot?  Nice job.

Mark, after I cut about 1 1/2 inches off the tip, I  took it to the anvil, got a hammer and ovaled the end with a few hard smacks. I really had to force it in.
