FRETS.NET

A customer has brought in a broken acrylic neck on a Washburn electric. I've never even seen one before. He stated that he used some acrylic epoxy, with no avail. I thought about melting the two ends to a sticky consistancey and clamping them back together, with a follow up of some scraping, rasping and sanding. My question is, are there any chemicals out there that would work to melt both ends in order to reattach them permanately? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Well Jeff, Paul's research says everything we needed to know about this thread. After rereading and looking at the pictures again, if you are up to it, I would consider taking the fretboard off, and making a new headstock. Many of us here have had to do this work before, and since you have the original headstock (and as long as you have the proper powertools and micrometers) it is actually quite easy to do. Even taking a fretboard off is fairly simple.

What do you say?

There are three necks up on Ebay... None of them exactly what you need..

I do build more guitars than I repair, so I think I'm up to the task of making a new headstock. I just can't see that acrylic joining back well. Thanks guys.
