Headstock 'Fiberboard' source
Needing a source for some thin "fiberboard" to re-surface a headstock. (Maybe 'fiberboard' is the wrong term) It's the material manf. like Gibson uses.

LMII.COM has fibre veneer board in strips (under purfling and bindings) with various thicknesses. R.

Also try looking at "fishpaper" in so much as this is what the "fiberboard" that most sell for Lutherie purposes really is. Typically far less expensive purchased as "fishpaper" from electrical supply houses.

How thick should a headstock plate be?

Generally speaking - 3/32 of an inch or thinner (around 2.5 mm).
When replacing a headstock facing over a repaired section it helps if the plate is thick enough to provide some structural strength to the area to reinforce the area given that the tuner shaft length needs to be sufficent if any increase in thickness is going to be made.

Thickest LMII has is .080 or 2mm. I guess it could be laminated.

2 mm is fine if you are using fibre rather than wood laminate. I typically use tougher wood like ebony or maple at 2mm+, but as I said, a little thicker if you are repairing over a break never did any harm.

I would not use this stuff for the surface layer on a headstock, it's ok for layers underneath the headstock face but not great for the actual face. Use ebony or colored veneer or paint it black.

I was told that new Gibson guitars use vulcanized fiber for all new headstocks instead of holly.
What would the problems be in using it as a veneer? Can it be glued, sanded, and finished? I have a Hofner archtop in for repair with a melted plastic headstock and was thinking about using fiber as a replacement.

Delamination and variation in colour seem to be the issues. Especially if you sand through the layers
Gibson can probably just get it a few cents cheaper than the holly

Holly would be okay, but I'm having trouble finding any at a reasonable price.
